How to Register for Kedarnath Yatra

Publish Date: March 16, 2026 Category: Pilgrimage Tour

Every year, lakhs of devotees make their way to the Garhwal Himalayas to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva at one of the holiest Jyotirlingas in India. If you're planning your Kedarnath Yatra 2026, the very first thing you need to know is this — registration is mandatory. No pass, no entry. It's that simple.

Kedarnath registration is compulsory for all pilgrims. Without completing the official registration on the Uttarakhand Tourism portal, you won't be allowed to proceed beyond the checkpoint. So before you book hotels, arrange transport, or pack your bags — get your Yatra pass sorted first.

Kedarnath Yatra 2026: Key Dates at a Glance

Around 15,000 devotees will be allowed daily for the darshan of Baba Kedarnath in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag region. Daily slots fill up fast, especially in May and June — so early registration isn't just recommended, it's practically necessary.

Why Is Kedarnath Yatra Registration Mandatory?

This isn't just red tape. The 2013 Kedarnath disaster changed how the government manages pilgrim flow forever.

The registration system helps authorities track pilgrims in case of emergencies like landslides, bad weather, or medical issues. Government has also established Char Dham Registration. Check Points at various places to ensure that only pilgrims with valid registration are allowed to visit the temples. The checkpoint for Kedarnath is located at Sonprayag.

The Uttarakhand government also uses a GPS-based monitoring system to track registered pilgrims — not only to ensure the safety of travellers but also to regulate the number of visitors to each shrine, preventing overcrowding.

Think of your registration pass as your safety net in the mountains — not just a formality.

Official Registration Portal & App

The official website registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in provides the registration platform for pilgrims.

You can also register through:

  • Tourist Care Uttarakhand mobile app (Android/iOS)
  • WhatsApp — send "Yatra" to +91-8394833833
  • Offline counters at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Sonprayag, and other locations

Registration is completely free on the government portal. If a website or agent asks for a registration fee, you are likely on an unofficial or fraudulent site.

How to Register for Kedarnath Yatra 2026 Online — Step by Step

Here's the actual process, broken down cleanly:

Step Action
1 Visit registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in
2 Create an account using your mobile number (OTP verified)
3 Fill in personal details for each pilgrim in your group
4 Upload a government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar preferred)
5 Upload a recent passport-size photo
6 Select Kedarnath as your destination and choose travel date
7 Submit the form and download your QR-based e-Pass

Upon successful registration, you will receive a QR code via SMS/email or a printed slip. This Yatra Parchi/Registration Letter must be shown at the entry point of the shrine.

Keep both a digital and a printed copy. Mobile signal is unreliable in the mountains.

Documents Required for Registration

  • ✅ Aadhaar Card (most preferred)
  • ✅ Voter ID / Passport / Driving Licence
  • ✅ Active mobile number (for OTP)
  • ✅ Email ID
  • ✅ Passport-size photograph
  • ✅ Emergency contact details

Foreign nationals and NRIs without an Aadhaar card must complete registration through the official portal by selecting the "Foreign Pilgrim" option. The verification process is passport-based instead of Aadhaar-based.

Offline Registration — For Those Who Need It

Can't register online? No problem.

Pilgrims who reach Uttarakhand without completing the online process can visit the counters at Rishikesh, Haridwar, Sonprayag, Joshimath, and a few other points. Official staff help with the filling of forms and verification.

That said, offline counters get extremely crowded during May and June. If you're going that route, go early in the morning. Really early.

Helicopter Booking After Registration

Planning to fly to Kedarnath? Your Yatra registration number is the first thing the IRCTC portal will ask for.

All helicopter tickets are sold only through the official IRCTC website: heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Do not use any other website or trust agents who promise to get you tickets. There are many fake websites and scammers who try to steal money from pilgrims.

Every passenger has a weight limit of 75 kg. This includes your clothing and baggage — keep that in mind when packing.

Checkpost Verification During the Yatra

Your e-Pass will be checked at multiple points along the route.

Officials known as Yatrimitras scan the QR code on your registration pass to track pilgrim movement and ensure safety. Verification happens at the trek starting point, before using pony or palki services, and at the temple entrance itself.

Carry your valid ID alongside the e-Pass. The Yatra registration is only valid for your verification and for the date of the yatra selected. You can't reuse the same pass for a different day.

Medical Advisory for Pilgrims

Kedarnath lies at an altitude of around 11,755 feet in the Garhwal Himalayas, where weather conditions can change rapidly. Senior citizens (above 60 years) are advised to consult a doctor before travel. People with heart, asthma, or BP issues should carry medical clearance. Sudden altitude gain may cause breathlessness or fatigue.

The Uttarakhand Health Department has advised pilgrims to plan a seven-day tour for the Char Dham Yatra to adjust to the fluctuating climate conditions. Emergency medical officers, doctors and specialists are also placed on the routes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Waiting until you reach Rishikesh to register — offline slots run out
  • ❌ Booking helicopter tickets without getting your Yatra registration number first
  • ❌ Trusting third-party agents for registration (it's always free on the official site)
  • ❌ Registering on a fake lookalike website
  • ❌ Ignoring the date you selected — your pass is date-specific
  • ❌ Not carrying a printed backup copy in low-signal areas
