Descriptions
The Chopta Chandrashila Trek in Uttarakhand is one of the best options for a beginner-friendly and family-friendly Himalayan trek. With easy trails and stunning mountain views, this trek is suitable for all age groups, offering a perfect mix of comfort, light adventure, and scenic beauty.
Mythological Significance of Chandrashila Peak
Chandrashila Peak carries deep mythological significance. According to legends, the Moon God (Chandra) meditated here after being expelled from Devlok, giving the peak its name. Another belief says that Lord Ram meditated at Chandrashila after defeating Ravana. This makes the trek not just an adventure, but a journey through ancient Himalayan legends and spiritual history.
Why Chopta Chandrashila is Ideal for Beginners
A true beginner-friendly trek, the Chandrashila Trek—also known as Chopta Tungnath Trek or Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek—is perfect for those stepping into the world of trekking. With moderate trails and rewarding views of Mt. Nanda Devi, Mt. Trishul, and Mt. Chaukhamba, this trek delivers a high-altitude Himalayan experience without extreme difficulty.
Tungnath Temple – The Highest Shiva Temple
One of the biggest highlights of this trek is the sacred Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world at an altitude of about 12,000 feet. Tungnath is the most revered among the Panch Kedar temples. According to mythology, the Pandavas built these temples to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva. The 4 km trek from Chopta to Tungnath is easy, scenic, and suitable for all age groups.
Chopta Camping & Scenic Drive
The journey begins with camping in the lush green meadows of Chopta, making it unique compared to other Himalayan treks. You drive directly from Rishikesh to Chopta on Day 1, enjoying beautiful views of Devprayag and Rudraprayag, the famous river confluences. Chopta remains green even in winter, offering a peaceful camping experience amidst nature.
Chandrashila Summit Trek Experience
The trek to Chandrashila Summit (13,100 ft) is the most exciting part of the journey. Though the trail becomes steeper and snowy near the top, it remains manageable for most trekkers. The Chopta to Chandrashila trek distance is around 9 km, usually completed in 4–5 hours. This section perfectly blends adventure with leisure.
Deoria Tal – A Peaceful Ending
The trek concludes with a walk through forests to Deoria Tal, a serene alpine lake surrounded by greenery and mountains, offering a calm and refreshing end to the journey.
