Being the fact, Kedarnath Mandir and Tungnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, both are connected with a popular legend post the epic Mahabharata. As the mythology goes, it was the Pandavas from Mahabharata who built the Kedarnath shrine. But, it also led to the creation of Tungnath Mandir as well.

The legends goes, post the Pandavas with their wife Draupadi were looking for salvation from Lord Shiva. The lord by that time wasn’t ready to forgive them for annihilating their whole kin and decided to test them. Incarnated as a bull, he was hiding from the Pandavas until Bheem, the second son spotted him. The struggle begins and final ended splitting the bull into five part scattered in different directions. The site of Kedarnath is where the hump of the bull fell and the site of Tungnath Mandir is where the bull’s arm fell. These two pilgrimage sites completes the five major sites dedicated to God Shiva, also called Panch Kedar.

Best Time for Kedarnath Yatra with Tungnath Trek

Recommended Window: May to June and September to November

May: Temple freshly opened for the season. High pilgrim rush begins. Trails can have lingering snow near Kedarnath. Book mule or helicopter well in advance.

June: Peak season. Maximum facilities available at Gaurikund and Kedarnath. Warm days, cold nights. Crowds are heaviest in this month — start the trek early in the day.

July–August: Monsoon season. The Kedarnath trail becomes slippery in places and there is risk of road closures on the Rishikesh–Rudraprayag stretch. Not recommended for a comfortable experience.

September: Post-monsoon clarity. Skies clear, crowds reduce significantly, temperatures are pleasant. One of the best months for both Kedarnath and Tungnath. Ideal for photography.

October–November: Beautiful autumn colours. Temple closes around Diwali / Bhai Dooj. Snowfall possible in late October. If visiting October, plan for the first three weeks only.

Most pilgrims prefer September–October for the combination of clear views, reduced crowds, and peaceful atmosphere at both shrines.

Tips for Senior Citizens and Families

For Senior Citizens:

  • The mule or palki service is the most suitable option for the Kedarnath trek. Book in advance, especially for May–June.
  • The helicopter is the most comfortable choice — a 5–7 minute flight replaces a full day of trekking.
  • The Tungnath trail from Chopta (3.5 km, gradual ascent) is manageable for most healthy seniors with trekking poles.
  • Carry personal medications and inform our team of any heart or blood pressure conditions at time of booking.

For Families with Children:

  • Children aged 8 and above can manage the Tungnath trail with ease.
  • For Kedarnath, children under 10 are better served by the helicopter option.
  • The Chopta campsite on Day 3 is an excellent family setting — open meadows, fresh air, and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Pack extra warm layers for children; temperatures at Kedarnath and Tungnath drop sharply after sunset.

Safety Tips and Important Notices

  • Altitude: Both Kedarnath (11,657 ft) and Tungnath (12,073 ft) are above 11,000 ft. Those with hypertension, heart conditions, or prior altitude sickness history should consult a doctor before booking.
  • Monsoon advisory (July–August): The Kedarnath trail is prone to slippery conditions and landslide risk on road approaches during heavy rain. This package is not recommended during July–August.
  • The 2013 Kedarnath disaster permanently changed the trek route. The current 19 km route is well-managed and monitored by SDRF and NDRF teams during season. Flash flood alerts in the Mandakini valley should always be taken seriously.
  • Temple registration: Online registration for Kedarnath darshan through the official Uttarakhand tourism / Char Dham portal is recommended to avoid queue delays at peak times.
  • Carry valid Photo ID: Required at multiple checkpoints on the Kedarnath route. Aadhaar card or passport is mandatory.
