Descriptions

Kang Yatse II is a towering western peak of the mountain Kang Yatse, which is breathing a vibrant life in the key Himalayan region together with its twin eastern peak, Kang Yatse I. The rugged, pyramid-shaped peak stands at an elevation of 6,250m above the ground at the end of Markha Valley in Ladakh. But the surprise about its beautiful location does not stop here; the peak also harbors Hemis National Park on its premises. So, someone with a mindset to climb this beauty will surely be exposed to the rich wildlife of the Himalayas; animals like snow leopards, argalis, and mountain deer will come as a scenic delight to your eyes.

It takes around 12 days to reach the Kang Yatse II mountain top from Leh and has an easy level of difficulty as compared to other Himalayan expeditions. You don’t have to have any technical mountaineering knowledge to climb this expedition. And this summit will be a great conquering milestone for all those aspiring trekkers who wish to take up the difficult levels of expeditions in the near future because it will help you test your limits.

Once you register yourself for this expedition with Himalayan Holidays, your trekking adventure will start from Shang Sumdo village and make you take a steep climb up the Markha Gorge until you reach the lush-green meadows of Nimaling, perched at an elevation of 5130m. One has to climb at a very fast pace to reach Nimaling because of the rocky footing, and once you reach there, you can lose your tiredness to the surreal view before you trek again towards the summit.

As a reward, you will go through an inexplicable journey of a lifetime and will be served with a surreal view of other mountain tops like K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum Massif in the north and Nun Kun and Zanskar Peak in the west.

Leh is the cultural and largest town of the Union Territory of Ladakh and is home to many of the high passes in India. The journey to the whole of Leh is filled with a walk through the rugged hills and valleys, a serene view of the turquoise-colored Pangong Lake, and a drive on the magnetic roads.

Day 03 – A scenic drive to the village Skiu via Chilling from Leh; 7km, 3 – 4 hours

Today, you will make an early morning journey from Leh through the famous magnetic hills. Along this journey, you will also pay a brief visit to Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, which is heartily revered by the people of the Sikh religion because Guru Nanak Ji fought a demon here at this place, and a boulder with the body imprint of Guru Nanak Ji and footprints of the demon is on a wide display at this place. And Spituk Monastery, which is home to about 100 monks who have been worshipping the old statue of Kali for ages and also enjoys a masked-cultural show once a year.

Then, you will witness the changing vegetation as you drive through the dry grassland until you reach the confluence of the Indus River and the Zanskar River. From there, you take a muddy path till you reach a small village called Chilling, where you can also enjoy a cup of tea in a tented tea house.

Chilling will be your last driving area because, from here, you will get on your feet and trek for 3 hours to your first camping site in the village of Skiu.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 04 – Trek to Markha from Skiu; 20km, 10 – 11 hours

Today, we will walk a fairly level path, and the running Markha River alongside this path will only make this hike a memorable experience for you. You will have to trek about 20km during this journey, and this will be the longest covering path of this expedition.

You will cross various ancient settlements during this journey, like Lhatos, a religious shrine perched atop a hill where local deities are worshipped, and Mani Walls, an ancient stone that had Buddhist prayers beautifully inscribed on the surface.

The best part of this hike will be a quick stopover at the various tented teahouse lines across this path. Upon reaching Markha village, you will get settled in your tent and enjoy a calming sleep.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 05 – Tread along the Markha Valley trail to reach Hankar; 10km, 7 –8 hours

After having breakfast, you resume the expedition and walk on the mesmerizing Markha Valley trail. Somewhere along the steep and winding path, you will pay a brief visit to the Techa Monastery, a beautiful Buddhist shrine where you can witness the seriousness of religion as monks perform prayers every day in a harsh living environment.

The path then intersects the river various times before finally landing you at the last hamlet in the valley, Umlung. When you trail out of this small village, you will get your first glimpse of Kang Yatse. After traveling for 7 to 8 hours, you will reach Hankar, where you will enjoy camping.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 06 – Hankar to Nimaling; 14km, 8 –9 hours

Today, you will walk up to the gorgeous plateau of Nimaling, where people all over the valley come to graze their sheep during the summer.

You will not walk along a desolate path today, but the path will be bustling with trekkers from different summits, and herds will also be passing you along this journey. So, you will feel most alive on this day.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 07 – Nimaling to Kang Yatse II Base Camp; 5km, 3 – 4 hours

Today, you will enjoy the shortest trekking journey, and it will surely last 4 hours. The trail will start uphill, first from Nimaling, until you reach the top of the ridge.

From this top, you will also witness the wholesome view of Kand Yatse II mountain and be mesmerized by its untouched beauty. From there, you will walk down on the loose rocks and across the river to reach the base camp.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 08 – Enjoy a view day at the Base Camp

Today, you will teach your body to become comfortable with high altitudes by taking a rest day at the base camp. You will also learn various technical mountaineering skills, like the use of crampons and an ice axe to climb on ice.

For the rest of the evening, you will enjoy the surreal view so much that you will surely believe in this journey.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 09 – Base Camp to Summit – Trek back to Base Camp

Sorry, but you will be alarmed at midnight because the hike to the summit will start at midnight. The trail to the top of Kang Yatse II generally walks you through scree and moraine, so years of mountaineering practice will come in handy here.

Trekkers will keep climbing the ridge until we reach the ablation zone of the glacier, and from there, you will be roped up and taken to the glassy glacier area. Hereon, we will steadily climb the north face of the Northwest Ridge.

Once you overcome the rocky path of the Northwest Ridge, you will reach the mountain top and complete the summit. So, if we start at 12 a.m., then, as per previous statistics, we reach the summit around 8 a.m. Once you witness the beauty of the summit and enjoy the surreal view of other mountain tops like K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum Massif in the north, Nun Kun, and Zanskar Peak in the west, we descend back to the base camp, where you will enjoy another night.

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11 – Base Camp to Leh via Kongmaru La pass and Chokdo; 17km, 9 –10 hours
