Descriptions

Shining brightly and high above the white thunderous clouds, Mount Kun is perched slightly at a lower level than its neighboring peak, Mount Nun. These two lofts and snow-covered peaks together form the gigantic Nun-Kun massif in the upper Suru Valley, located on the Indian side of the Line of Control in Ladakh. Mount Kun stands at a towering elevation of 7,077m above sea level and is like a stepping stone for all those mountaineers who are wishing to climb 8000+ someday. Apart from a memorable experience, to the south of Mount Kun lies Kishtwar National Park, where you get to catch glimpse of various wildlife animals of the Himalayas like mountain deer, argali, snow leopard, etc.

The Mount Kun expeditions let you wander among the wilderness of the Himalayas for 23 days and give you a perfect experience to remember for a lifetime. To conquer this massive mountain, one has to have some prior technical mountaineering knowledge, like how to use ice axes, crampons, and the rope-up procedure. Moreover, the experienced mountaineers are also very well familiar with the expedition demands; they are being trained to be mentally and physically fit to withstand all the challenges during the summit.

Once you reach the top of Mount Kun, you will get a surreal view of many other notable peaks like Karakoram Range, Kashmir Valley, Ladakh Valley, Nun Peak, and Zanskar Range. And the gorgeous view will itself vanquish all your tiredness and past worries.

Our experienced team of mountaineers and tour guides at Himalayan Holidays carry out these expeditions every year and fulfil the dreams of thousands of mountaineers. If you are also planning an expedition to Mount Kun in the near future, then you are welcome to go through our specially customized itinerary, which also lets you witness the beauty of Leh.

We suggest you go through our specially customized itinerary for more information.

Program

Day 01 – Arrival in Leh

Once you reach the Leh Airport, you will be received by our representative, who will escort you to your hotel room in Leh. The first day of the expedition will be your rest day because, before starting the trek, one needs to be rested well enough.

Once you check-in to your hotel room, you can spend the whole day as per your liking—you can go for a shopping walk on the streets of Leh. But be sure to reach back to your hotel room a little early so that your body gets enough rest for the expedition.

Meals: Dinner

Day 02 – Enjoy a day trip to the monasteries and ancient temples of Leh

We will need another layover to make our bodies adapt to the harsh environment of Leh, so you get a full day to explore the local culture of Leh. As many of us know, Leh has been a dream place for many of us and has always held a curious vibe among the millennials for a long time. There are many monasteries in Leh which one can visit, like Hemis Monastery, the wealthiest monastery of Leh, which is famous for its unique wall paintings and centuries-old scripts, journals, etc. Apart from this, there are 100 monks residing in this monastery, as per an old religious belief that a Buddhist monk named Naropa received enlightenment over here.

Thiksey Monastery, settled at an altitude of 11,800 feet, is one of the gorgeous monasteries of Leh where you can find decade-old religious books, journals, scripts, etc.

Shortly in the evening, you will be driven to the local market in Leh, where you can enjoy a little shopping time and also enjoy the various local dishes. Soon after this walk, you will be escorted back to your hotel room for an overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 03 – Drive from Leh to Kargil

Today, the tour representative will ask that you meet early at the reception because you will make an early morning journey towards Kargil. For many of us, Kargil has only been heard during history classes, when we were told about how thousands of soldiers died in a war at this place. The road to Kargil will take you through a picturesque journey of snow-covered mountains and bare highlands.

You will make a quick stopover at the War Memorial Museum in Kargil, where you will take a knowledge tour and learn about the well-preserved history of our soldiers.

After 5–6 hours of driving, you will reach Kargil in the evening. First, you will check in to your hotel room, and afterward, you will be free to spend the rest of the day as per your liking.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 04 – Take a scenic and untraveled route to Shafat Nala from Kargil

Shafat Nala is about 14km away from Kargil, but it takes around 2–3 hours to reach this place. Shafat Nala is a base point for mountaineers aiming to climb the very famous Nun Kun massif. One has to take a journey along the Suru River to reach Shafat Nala.

Once you reach Shafat Nala, you will establish your camps for the night here at this place. After settling down and becoming comfortable with the weather conditions, you can also take a hike up to the Shafat Glacier. At Shafat Glacier, you can also witness its raw beauty and enjoy peace mixed with the sound of desolation.

Don't forget to live the famous moment of having Maggie in front of the old glacial mountains.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 05 – Shafat Nala – Base Camp: 5-7 hours

Today, you will be asked to wake up early because now you will get on your feet and walk towards your destination. Keep in mind that you will have to make some gradual ascent today, and your journey will be filled with walking on various rough glacial terrains and moraines, but you need to maintain a constant speed in order to avoid any mishaps.

You will pass through many mesmerizing points from where you can spot the peanut-sized Leh and other places. So, be sure to capture the moments somewhere in your heart for future reminiscing. After reaching the base camp, once again establish your tent and rest for the day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 06 – Day 17 – Base Camp – Kun (7,077m altitude) - Base Camp

During your journey to the summit, you will set up about three base camps: Camp 1, Camp 2, and Camp 3. The journey to Camp 1 will be filled with scree and moraines. You will apply your technical mountaineering knowledge a lot in reaching this place. And after many unfiltered struggles on climbing slopes to Camp 1, you will set up your tent here at this place and sleep soundly under the blinking lights of stars.

Again, you will wake up to the light of the shimmering sun and witness the surreal view of the sun coming into people’s lives today with the largest ever watch. The path to Camp 2 is filled with slopes of 45–50 degrees made on rough-cut rock and ice and also crosses a glacier. Day 2 towards Base Camp 2 will be the most technical journey, where 1000 meters of fixed rope will be used. And once you touch this place, you will again enjoy an overnight stay by being cuddled under a sheet of ice and magnetic hills.

The next day, you will again resume your journey towards Camp 3, and for this journey, you will rope up a high slope and cross a hardened plateau that will magically separate your journey from Mount Nun. Take the rest after establishing tents at Camp 3. From Camp 3, the path ascends steeply for about 200 m, and after crossing some serious cornice features, you will touch the summit of Mount Kun. Let yourself dissolve into the majestic view of Kun Peak and also witness the surreal views of Zanskar Valley, Ladakh Peak, Karakoram Peak, and Kashmir Valley.

Afterward, you will descend back to the base camp in the same order so as to avoid any discord.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 18 – Trek Back to Shafat Nala from Base Camp

After feeling immense pleasure after conquering the quest, you will trek back down to Shafat Nala. Today, you will once again get a chance to relive your journey through interesting and strikingly beautiful scenery.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 19 – Drive back to Kargil from Shafat Nala

Wake up! Get ready to pass through the picturesque landscape, but in reverse order, and drive back to Kargil. You can also enjoy some lazy stopovers at the places from which you wish to absorb the view a little more than the bus view.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 20 – Drive back to Leh from Kargil

After having breakfast, you will once again enjoy a bus journey back to Leh, but don’t forget to look out of your window for mesmerizing views. On arriving in Leh, you will be checked in to your hotel room for an overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 21 – Departure from Leh

After having breakfast before 10 a.m., the tour representative will take you to Leh Airport and will also say goodbye to you. He would also wish for a future journey with the Himalayan Holiday.
