A winter trek goes wrong in predictable ways: the wrong month, thin layers, cold feet, and a climb the group was not ready for. All four are decided before you reach the trailhead.
This guide follows the order in which you will make the decisions: month, trek type, training, gear, altitude, paperwork, and what to check for the 2026-27 season. If you want a list of treks with altitude and duration, use our guide to the best winter treks in Uttarakhand.

Quick answer Go in January or February if snow is the point, and in December for cold, clear weather with less of it. Choose a trek by its daily itinerary, not its length: check the walking hours and how quickly it climbs to the highest camp. Train before you go, pack three layers and waterproof boots, and tell your trek leader about a headache early. Confirm permits and cancellation terms before you pay. |
Pick the month first
Snow decides the kind of trek you get, and snow follows the calendar. Depth changes every season, so treat the table as a guide.
| Month | What the trail is like | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|
| December | Cold and clear. Light snow often arrives late in the month. | You want a winter feel and can live with patchy snow. |
| January and February | Usually the deepest snow, frozen lakes and the coldest nights. | Snow is the reason you are going. |
| March | Skies are often clearer and snow can stay at the higher camps. Ice and hard snow can still sit on the trail. | You want views and fewer cold nights. |
If snow is the reason you are going, aim for January or February. December is a good trek, but it may not match the snow in the photos. Ask your operator for recent conditions on your route before you commit.
Match the trek to the least experienced person
Choose for the person in your group with the least trekking experience. Then read each trek's daily itinerary. Walking hours, total climb and the height of the highest camp tell you more than the number of days.
| If you want | Start with |
|---|---|
| A first snow trek | Kedarkantha or Dayara Bugyal |
| Wide mountain views | Kuari Pass or Chopta Chandrashila |
| A short trip | Nag Tibba |
| Frozen lakes | Brahmatal |
| A winter walk for experienced trekkers | Chadar, if the river freezes |
Train for snow walking
Snow and a loaded backpack slow every step, so train for sustained uphill walking. Ask your operator what fitness standard it expects for your trek, and start well before departure.
- Cardio: jogging, cycling or stair climbing.
- Leg strength: squats, lunges and step-ups.
- Long walks with your loaded daypack, in the boots you will wear on the trek.
What to pack for a winter trek
On the ground, most trouble starts with feet and hands. Spend there first.
| Layer | What to carry | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Thermal top and bottom | Cotton instead of wool or synthetic |
| Mid | Fleece or a light down jacket | One thick layer instead of two thinner ones |
| Outer | Waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers | A fashion jacket that is not waterproof |
| Feet | Waterproof, ankle-supporting boots and two or three pairs of wool socks | New boots worn for the first time on the trail |
| Hands and head | Thin liners, insulated gloves, woollen cap or balaclava | One pair of gloves that gets wet |
| Eyes and skin | UV sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm | Skipping sunglasses in strong snow glare |
Also carry gaiters, trekking poles, a headlamp with spare batteries, an insulated water bottle, a dry bag and a small first-aid kit with your own medicines.
Altitude, cold and weather
Altitude sickness on a winter trek
Altitude illness is a risk from about 2,500 m, and it can occasionally start lower. Many winter treks go higher than that.
The Wilderness Medical Society's 2024 guidelines limit the rise in sleeping altitude to about 500 m a day above 3,000 m. Ask how your itinerary handles the climb to the highest camp.
Early signs are headache, nausea, dizziness and poor sleep. Tell your trek leader early and do not go higher while you have symptoms. If they get worse, going down is the treatment. Whether to take acetazolamide is your doctor's decision.
Cold and weather on a winter trek
Keep fingers and toes dry, change out of damp socks at camp, and eat and drink even when you do not feel thirsty. Report numbness that does not fade.
Snowfall can delay or cancel a summit push, so keep a spare day before any flight or train home.
A planning timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| As soon as you choose | Pick the month and a trek that suits the least experienced person. Start training. |
| When you book | Ask about permits, inclusions and cancellation terms. |
| A few weeks out | Buy or rent gear. Break in your boots on long walks. |
| The final week | Ask the operator for weather and trail status. Confirm pickup details. |
| Day before | Pack with trail items on top. Keep ID and any medical information handy. |
Permits, documents and cost
Permit rules differ by trek. Many Uttarakhand routes pass through forest land, national parks or sanctuaries and usually need a forest permit.
The state has been drafting new trekking regulations, including registration for operators and guides. Reports in early and mid 2026 described them as not yet final. Confirm the current rules for your route with your operator instead of assuming.
Carry a government photo ID. Ask your operator which other documents it needs, such as a medical form or travel insurance.
Price depends on trek length, group size, pickup city, transport, gear rental and whether porters carry your backpack. Before comparing two quotes, check what each includes: base village stay, camping equipment, meals, trek leader and transport from the pickup point. Current prices are on the winter trek package pages.
Winter 2026-27: check these before you book
- Chadar: no official 2027 dates were found as of October 29, 2026. In January 2026 the trek was suspended because the Zanskar had not frozen into stable ice, and an April 2026 report says the ice never formed that winter. Ask for the current status before paying.
- Snow: depth changes every season. Ask the operator for current conditions on your route and what it does when the trail has little snow.
- Rules: Uttarakhand's trekking regulations were still under discussion in 2026 reports. Confirm the permit and registration requirements for your trek.
- Terms: ask what happens if weather stops the trek, and what the cancellation terms are.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
| Instead of this | Do this |
|---|---|
| Choosing a trek from photos and ignoring the month | Pick the month first, then the trek |
| Choosing by number of days | Read the daily itinerary: walking hours and the climb to the highest camp |
| Wearing cotton or denim | Wool or synthetic layers |
| Wearing new boots on the trail | Break them in on long walks |
| Ignoring a headache and climbing on | Tell the leader early and stay at your current altitude or go down if it worsens |
| Booking a flight home for the last day | Keep a spare day |
| Assuming Chadar runs every year | Ask for the current status first |

Winter trek FAQs
What is the best month for a winter trek in India?
January and February usually bring the deepest snow. December is colder and clearer with less snow, and March often has clearer skies with snow at the higher camps. Snow varies every season.
Can beginners do a winter trek?
Yes, on a trek rated easy to moderate and with a qualified trek leader. Read the daily itinerary for walking hours and the climb to the highest camp.
I am not very fit. Can I still go?
Tell the operator before booking, ask what fitness standard the trek expects and start training well ahead.
How cold does it get on a winter trek?
Camp nights fall below zero on most snow treks and are colder at higher camps. Check the trek page for the range on your route.
What should I wear on a winter trek?
Three layers: a thermal base, a fleece or light down mid layer and a waterproof outer shell. Add waterproof boots, wool socks, gloves and a cap.
How do I prevent altitude sickness on a winter trek?
Raise your sleeping altitude gradually, report headache or nausea early, do not go higher while you have symptoms and go down if they worsen.
Do I need a permit for a winter trek?
It depends on the route. Many routes cross forest land or protected areas and need forest permits. Ask your operator who arranges them and whether any new registration rules apply.
Is the Chadar trek open this winter?
It depends on river ice. The 2026 trek was suspended, and no official 2027 dates were found as of October 29, 2026.
What if there is no snow or the weather turns?
Ask the operator before booking how it handles low snow and weather stops. Keep a spare day in your travel plan.

Your next step
Before you pay for any winter trek, send the operator four questions: how the itinerary handles the climb to the highest camp, who arranges permits and what rules apply now, what the price includes, and what happens if snow or weather stops the trek.
Clear answers to those four tell you more than any brochure. If you plan a winter trek in India this season, send your dates and group size through the contact page, by WhatsApp on +91-9821088817 or to tours@shikhar.com.
